Your catalytic combustor in your wood burning stove will last around 5 to 6 years. Inspect clean the combustor yearly. A clogged cobustor will not fire properly decreasing the heat output and possibly cause back puffing. The combustors honeycomb cells can easily be cleaned out using the same compressed air you use on your computer. If any of the cells are clogged and the air will not clear it do not use anything sharp as you might scratch the surface. A pipette (pipe cleaner) in a thin wire with soft bristles. The surface if the combustor is coated with palladium and removing it will not allow the combustor to properly fire and allow the ceramic to start crumbling.
|
It is important to allow the combustor to reach an internal temperature of around 1100 degrees before engaging it. Make sure your catalytic probe thermometer is working, if the probe becomes over heated it can stick. If you do not have a probe thermometer a surface thermometer will also work. Some wood stoves use a digital thermometer or one can be inserted through the back of the fire box.

When starting your fire do not use newspaper or any wax based fire starters. Fly ash from paper will clog the combustor and burning waxy fire starters will leave a wax residue on the cells. A natural fire starter is best like kindling or fatwood. It is recommended not to use bark as it contains creosote and also creates ash. Yes most of the ash left in your wood stove is from the bark. If you can burn wood without the bark you will have less ash to cleanup afterword.
